Catholic Feminism and the Social Question in Chile, 1910-1917: The Liga De Damas Chilenas (Roman Catholic Studies)
Founded in 1912, the Liga de Damas Chilenas (League of Chilean Ladies) was the “pioneering association” of aristocratic Catholic conservative feminism in Chile. Examining the Liga’s first few years, the author describes their efforts to insert themselves into the debate over the interrelated “social” (class) question and the “woman’s” question. She describes their efforts as an attempt to resolve these questions through a form of upper-class Catholic social action and moralizing that sought to return women workers to their “true” place within the home.
